Shannon-Erne Waterway

Reopened in 1994, the Shannon-Erne Waterway links the rivers Shannon and Erne, creating over 300km of navigable waters and Europe's longest navigable inland stetch.

The scenic Shannon-Erne link features 16 fully automated locks, 34 stone bridges and six fully serviced mooring areas, one of which is at Ballyconnell. www.emeraldstar.ie


Fishing in Ballyconnell - Belturbet

Cavan is famous for the quality of its fishing and is reported to have
365 lakes one for everyday of the year. The Erne Shannon waterway system
spreads out to cover most Cavan.

Belturbet Railway Station

Belturbet, one of Cavan’s most attractive and historic towns on the banks of the River Erne, is home to the recently refurbished Railway Station.

The project is a tasteful blend of the old and the new, and includes the total restoration of Belturbet Railway Station, which first opened in 1885, and was the connecting point for the GNR Broad Gauge and Cavan & Leitrim Narrow Gauge Railway companies until its closure in 1959. www.belturbet-station.com

Drumlane Monastic Site


Sitting between Drumlane and Derrybrick loughs are the remains of the 6th Century Monastery founded by St Mogue, the Bishop of Ferns. A round tower standing over 11 metres high is one of the most striking features of the site.
